Who is Jesus?

Jesus Christ is without a doubt the most significant person to ever live and walk on this earth. He is the central figure of Christian faith, the subject of worship for millions, and the most talked about, most written about, most sung about person ever, period. Some love and adore Him, while others hate or even deny His existence. But who is He, really?

Jesus, in His own words:

  • John 6:35 - "And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."
  • John 6:48 - "I am the bread of life."
  • John 6:51 - "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world."
  • John 8:12 - "Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."
  • John 8:23-24 - "And He said to them, "You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am [He], you will die in your sins."
  • John 8:58 - "Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."
  • John 9:5 - "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
  • John 10:7-9 - "Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who [ever] came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture."
  • John 10:11, 14-18 - "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. ...  "I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father."
  • John 11:25 - "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live."
  • John 14:6 - "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
  • John 15:1-6 - "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned."

What others who lived during His lifetime said about Him:

  • Matthew 14:33 - "Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God."
  • John 1:29 - "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!""
  • John 1:49 - "Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"
  • Matthew 16:16 - "Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
  • John 11:27 - "She said to Him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."
  • Matthew 27:54 - "So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

The list could go on and on. We could cite verses from the Epistles and the book of Revelation pointing out the same thing. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is God. Jesus is the Saviour of the world. Jesus did die on the cross for our sins. Jesus did rise from the dead...

An important question remains to be asked. It is the same question Jesus asked the Twelve about Himself in Matthew 16:15. And the answer needs to be your own. Not what others say or think or anything else. The evidence is before you and the Risen Jesus is asking you:

"Who do you say that I am?"
